Purpose

Assessment of University Learning Competencies . Throughout the MSN program, a wide array of professional competencies are introduced and cultivated through both classroom and practicum learning. Many of the competencies are unique to the profession, while others are shared across disciplines. In addition to these professional competencies, Chamberlain University recognizes learning competencies central to graduate education that are achieved through the MSN program of study.

Domains addressed within the Chamberlain University learning competencies include the following: care-focused, career readiness, information literacy, leadership/change agent, professional communication, and equity/inclusivity. Within these six domains there are nine graduate-level competencies for Chamberlain University MSN students:

  1. Care-focused
    1. Integrates the concepts of care for self and care and support for colleagues to create a workplace environment of respect, collaboration, collegiality, creativity, productivity, community, and teamwork.
  2. Career Readiness
    1. Integrates professionalism, integrity, personal accountability, and ethical behaviors to assure effective performance within the work setting and professional role.
    2. Models a commitment to career development, lifelong learning, and participation in research and scholarly inquiry to maintain professional competency.
  3. Information Literacy
    1. Utilizes digital and information technology to critique issues, information, and ideas systematically to support informed decision-making and implement effective solutions.
  4. Leadership/Change Agent
    1. Models systems-focused, authentic change leadership practices that enhance collaboration and inspire others to reach their full potential.
  5. Professional Communication
    1. Expresses leadership in interprofessional teams to advance health and/or organizational outcomes.
    2. Communicates thoughts and ideas clearly, professionally, and effectively in written and oral forms.
  6. Equity/Inclusivity
    1. Models openness, inclusiveness, sensitivity, and respect with all people.
    2. Advocates for human rights, social justice, and health equity at the local, national, and/or global level.

During the program of study, a variety of learning activities have been employed to build student competency in each of these domains. This assignment provides an opportunity to reflect upon your achievement of the nine university learning competencies outlined above.

  I engaged in team discussions and collaborative cafes.  Through respectful engagement, I promoted a healthy environment for interaction.  I successfully led a fall prevention project that required continuous support and coordination with colleagues.  This experience prepared me to collaborate with the college to improve the delivery of health outcomes.

  I completed the implementation of the fall prevention program and ensured that ethical principles such as beneficence were adhered to.   Successfully implemented fall prevention program which requires professionalism such as effective communication and accountability to be implemented. The experiences honed my skills in integrating professionalism in nursing care which will be valuable in providing ethical and accountable care to patients.
