Answer Guide: Quality Improvement Model Application

Quality Improvement Model Application

Among the quality and safety issues that affect the healthcare sector is hospital-acquired conditions, particularly, pressure ulcer (PUs). PUs are localized damage or injury to the skin tissue due to pressure and shear from lying on the surface for long periods during hospitalization. They mainly affect the skin over protuberant bones such as heels (Mervis & Phillips, 2019). The vulnerable people to PUs include those who are unconscious, lack physical activity, are elderly, malnourished, or have incontinence (both urinary and fecal) (Borojeny et al., 2020). PUs negatively affect the quality of care and patient safety from harm while at the hospital, leading to health complications and poor health outcomes, and the need for preventive evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions (Zhang et al., 2021). The purpose of this paper is to discuss quality improvement through the prevention and reduction of PUs. It includes background and scope, improvement goals, quality philosophy, guidelines, benchmarks, EBP standards, processes, and recommendations for improvement.

Background and Scope of the Problem

Approximately 2.5 million people in the United States (U.S.) develop hospital-acquired PUs per annum, which account for an average of sixty thousand deaths every year (Borojeny et al., 2020). PUs cost the U.S. nation about $9.1 to $11.6 billion more in healthcare expenses per annum, with PU-affected patients incurring an extra $700,000 in medical …Unlock the Full Solution Now – Click to Get All Answers!”
