Mr. B, a 71-year-old patient is hospitalized for a hip injury following a major fall while at home. The patient, having limited mobility, stays in bed most of the time. The nurses regularly check upon him to give medications. Nonetheless, the nurse rarely re-position Mr. B and after 14 days in the hospital, he is found to have developed skin sores. Now, the healthcare providers have an additional health issue (that was preventable) to address before discharging the patient. This is both a quality and safety issue as it affects the patient’s quality of care and life and is healthy safety. It increases his hospitalization period, reduces his satisfaction levels, and increases both direct and indirect costs of care involved.
